Whats sets apart an independent retailer?

Arron Bird:
Cracking question Jordan. I think for myself and this company, the main thing that sets us apart is the fact that we offer a very personal service.
I’d like to think we’re very knowledgeable and very approachable and I think that’s important when you’re spending, you receive valuable advice before you spend hard-earned money on a nice new kitchen.

It's important for a customer to buy from an established retailer?

Arron Bird:
The obvious answer for me is going to be – yes.
I look at what we do here in a way as if I was doing it for myself so if I was looking to go and buy a new kitchen, I personally would want to be able to receive the kind of services that we offer here. Naturally, we don’t need to make an effort as we just are what we are. People buy from all sorts of places but for me, I absolutely say it’s very very important.

What installation and project management service is typically offered by an independent?

Arron Bird:

I can’t vouch for all independents obviously but only for what we do here. We do a full room conversion if that is what the client actually wants, so when we survey it’s a full survey, not a drive-by survey.

We’ll encourage the customer to understand exactly what needs to be done to convert the old room to a new room. The kitchen is part of that and the rest of it may be some building works, plastering, some plumbing and electrical works etc

How important would you say is for customers to see physical displays?

Arron Bird:

Would you ever buy anything without touching and seeing it first?
I mean it’s a tactile industry, we encourage everybody to come into the showroom. The hardest thing is knowing what displays to put in a showroom change. We’re in a fashion industry but yeah it would be crazy in our book to ever make any kind of selection without actually seeing the items that you want for your new kitchen.

What design ability can an independent usually offer?

Arron Bird:

An independent should offer the best design service. It’s as simple as that. Our training is something that has to be done very hands-on and we never stop learning. I personally have 33 years experience but I’m still learning every day.  What we do have is a huge range of cupboard sizes that maybe the multiple stores just don’t have, so we won’t have crazy filler spaces and tray spaces.  We should be able to fill the space and really make the design stand out.

And what about computer-aided design would you say that's important to help customer visualization?

Arron Bird:

Oh yes, it is but it’s only part of what we actually offer.  During the lockdown period, the visualizations we were sending out were as 360 renders to help people massively but again, you can’t beat coming into the studio seeing the items and then working with the visualization to see how it looks in your room, so yes it’s very important.

Do you find your customers researching before they visit a showroom?

Arron Bird:

To an extent yes, however, a genuine deal is quite difficult to find.
Here we have transparency in everything that we do to help find a genuine deal.  If there’s one you’ll get the best deal if you do it the way we we advise. Yes, I think so.

What colors would you advise matching with a pink?

Arron Bird:

To an extent yes, however, a genuine deal is quite difficult to find.
Here we offer we call it transparency in everything that we do so find a genuine deal if there’s one you’ll get the best deal if you do it the way we do it I think so.

What colors would you advise matching with a pink?

Arron Bird:

Brilliant Jordan brilliant, we have a pink shaker door here and it is popular. I have to say, it’s quite a current colour. We’ve never done a complete pink kitchen and we would encourage it to be mixed with probably some grey. There’s a grey mat finish and maybe with a chalk white but together they do look amazing and here we offer these shaker doors in six different widths of the style, so we have 60 millimetre all the way up to 110 millimetres and we do all the sizes in between, so a good choice.

Jordan Burns: So other than pink what are the latest trends in the market at the moment is it still minimalistic or are people still after practical storage?

Arron Bird:

That is a brilliant question child because we have been doing this for many years since 1974. We have repeat business which sounds a bit weird for a kitchen because if you’re going to buy one yourself you perhaps wouldn’t consider changing it in 5, 10 or even 15 years as you’d want it to last. We are taking out kitchens that are 20 to 25 years old and to be fair, they still work brilliantly but that client wants something that’s a little bit more modern, so we would be replacing limed oak doors and maybe a laminated work surface because there wasn’t much choice of anything else those years ago. Wooden trim on the edge of the worktop you know, stuff that just looks dated but the materials still look great the quality that we were installing then is the same as it is now really. So those people may go on a different journey, they want something that’s a little bit easier to clean, a bit more modern but the design they’ve been living with for for 20 to 25 years still works for them but now there’s a lot of storage corner storage that just wasn’t available then, so we just tweak it and and generally we will modernise them but it’s good that they come back here.
